University of Missouri

Science Reporter - March 2014 – April 2014

SciXchange shed light on the complex nature of accurately reporting scientific research. I underwent a two-fold experiment with a team of journalists and scientists, and we devised the following hypothesis before commencing: If journalists are embedded in the scientific lab, they will be able to communicate the scientific research more clearly to the general public.

Overall, the experiment confirmed our hypothesis. We shared our research through a comprehensive poster presenting our findings along with future recommendations during Life Sciences Week at the University of Missouri.

Journalism SciXchange: Embedding journalists in the scientific laboratory

Two teams of three journalists had an opportunity to be embedded in a science lab. The experiment was two-fold — the journalists worked with transgenic organisms in the lab while being part of the experiment itself. Before the experiment began team two came up with the following hypothesis: If journalists are embedded in the scientific lab, they will be able to communicate the scientific research more clearly to the general public. This video presents a breakdown of the scientific process including successes, failures and recommendations for future SciXchange projects. http://bit.ly/1NJMLi4

Almeta Crayton shared her worldview: ‘It’s about the children’

In the summer of 2015, I sat in an old chair on a front yard in an unfamiliar neighborhood. I was in the heart of Columbia’s First Ward, the place Almeta Crayton called home, and I was there to interview Ms. Almeta. What began as a simple story for a class project ended up providing a life lesson. But then again, that’s how Ms. Almeta lived her life — leading by example and going above and beyond. She understood the importance of putting a face to issues that might not always be the easiest to talk about. During our conversation, she shared her worldview about things such as being a positive example for kids, the importance of having a purpose in life and why community connections matter. Here, I share clips from our June conversations, with the hope that others can learn from them as well.
